In Qing Dynasty, on the 13th September, 1876, the British send the officials to Chongqing as the Yantai Treaty. On the 31st March, 1890, Chongqing became the treaty port according to another treaty between China and British. Then, the Yangtze Cruise from Yichang to Chongqing has been opened up. In 1890, the British set the consulate general in Chongqing. On the 1st March, 1890, Chongqing Customs has been established near Chaotianmen.

In 1895, Qing Dynasty was beat during the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). According to the treaty at that time, Chongqing became the first treaty port of mainland of China for Japanese as well as Suzhou City, Hangzhou City and Shashi City. In the meanwhile, the British and the France respectively established the consulate areas in Chongqing. In 1896, the France established the consulate general in Chongqing. In 1896, Japan established the consulate general in Chongqing. And then, America established the consulate general in Chongqing in 1896.

In 1901, Japan set the concession in Nanan District. At the same time, the France successively established the navy pier and military camp at Danzishi in Nan'an District.

In 1902, the Tsarist Russia established the Russian residence in Yuzhong District.

In 1904, the Germany established the consulate in Chongqing.
