Since the 1990s, the projects construction of Yangtze River navigation has been promoted as soon as possible. Nowadays, Yangtze Cruise and freighter are allowed to cross the Yangtze River in the whole night. The 1000-ton ship is accepted to cross Yangtze River from Yibin City to Chongqing Municipality. From Chongqing Municipality, the 3000-ton ships are accepted to cross.

The navigation marks on Yangtze River are used of electrification, and the system of navigation marks is standardized. The reformation of Yangtze River navigation has been successfully used in some areas of Yangtze River such as in Three Gorges reservoir area.
