Yangtze River Civilization Ⅲ - Pre-historical settlements and tribes

Several cities of early civilization discovered in the middle reaches of Yangtze River showed us some big architectural projects which required large scale of labor to finish. It demonstrates that in these ancient cities, a powerful governing center existed in order to operate, manage and complete these projects. In Yangtze River history, this is the result of the development of political and economic organizations. The segregated classes of the settlements, tombs and houses in the inner and outer city illustrate that the society was deepening in its hierarchy in both dispersed and unionized directions. The evidences of bronze melting, bronze processing and the brass items themselves appeared in these settlements indicate that there were tribes with complicated social layers. The organizational complicity of these tribes tells how the big construction of ancient city Shijiahe could be completed. The potteries, jades, bronzes of the Shijiahe culture manifest a complicated internal and external exchanging system. The characteristics of these settlements further demonstrate that during late Qujialing culture and early-to-middle period of Shijiahe culture, the ancient cities and settlements in middle reach area of Yangtze River went through an intensive change process. That indicates that the society had evolved into a higher developing stage.
