In Yangtze River history, Yangtze River flows through Yibin City (Sichuan Province), Luzhou City (Sichuan Province), Chongqing Municipality, Fuling City (Chongqing Municipality), Wanzhou City (Chongqing Municipality), Yichang City, Jingzhou City (Hubei Province), Wuhan Province (Wubei Province), Huangshi City (Hubei Province), Ezhou City (Hubei Province), Jiujiang City, Anqing City, Tongling City, Wuhu City, Nanjing City and Shanghai Municipality.

Nowadays, Yangtze River estuary consists of three different kinds of waterways. People know that Chongming Island is the estuary of Yangtze River. The water will flow through Chongming Island and then flows into the Eastern China Sea.

Actually, Chongqing Island consists of three different parts. For example, Chongming Island divides into Southern Branch and Northern Branch. And then the Southern Branch divides into Southern Port and Northern Port. At last, the Southern Port divides into Southern slot and Northern slot. All of the islands and branches and the sand beach are formed as the cumulate silt by the Yangtze River.

Chongming Island covers 1086 square kilometers and it is the third large one of China. It was formed long time ago during A.D 7 Century (Tang Dynasty). At that time, the Yangtze River estuaries were Eastern Sand Island and Western Sand Island, which regarded as the predecessor of Chongming Island.

After that, due to the cumulate silt of Yangtze River and the artificial reclamation, the acreage of Yangtze River estuary becomes larger. The three different kinds of waterways have been formed gradually. In 1958, the coverage of Chongming Island is about 608 square kilometers. Still now, the coverage of Chongming Island is about 1086 square kilometers.

The Main Stream of Yangtze River Estuary History Ⅱ

18 century ago, the main stream of Yangtze River flows into the sea from the Northern Branch. After that, Southern Branch became the main estuary of Yangtze River. At the beginning of the 21 century, there is about 25% of main stream of Yangzte River flows into the Eastern China Sea from the Northern Branch. In the middle of 21 century, there is little main stream passing the Northern Branch. Since that, Yangtze Cruise is not able to pass through in the Northern Branch of Yangtze River Estuary.
