Brief Introduction of Yangtze River History Ⅰ

Yangtze River is the largest one of China with the main stream of more than 6300 kilometers long. Yangtze River covers more than 1,800,000 square kilometers. According to the Yangtze River history, the annual average of flowing into the sea is about nine hundred and sixty billion cubic meters, which makes Yangtze River become the No.3 in the world with the length of the main stream together. According to the drill date, the Yangtze River Estuary lay in Yangzhou and Zhenjiang area about 5000-6000 years ago. About 2000 years ago, the Yangtze River Estuary still lay in Yangzhou and Zhejiang area. At that time, the Yangtze River surface is more than 20 kilometers in width. The sea tide could trace back to this area forming a dangerous sea bore. It is called Guanglin Sea Bore and could be seen in southern Yangzhou City.

The influential area of the sea bore could spread to the Jiujiang River. At that time, the Yangtze River estuary was an estero shaped as the same as the Hangzhou Bay. It looks like a trumpet. The entry of the Yangtze River estuary situates between the Juegang Port and Hangzhou Bay with 180 kilometers long in straight-line distance.

In the middle Tang Dynasty (A.D Century), there is a reef in the north of Mt. Zhongjiao of Yangtze River. The reef was called Haimensahn. It was regarded as the estuary of Yangtze River at that time. It proved that the estuary of Yangtze River was still exist near Yangzhou City and Zhenjiang. Actually, in Yangtze River history, Yangtze River Basin is one of the birthplaces of ancient Chinese culture. The rice planting has a long history about 4-5 thousand years. But in early Tang Dynasty, there was few population, thus the estuary of Yangtze River slowly forge ahead without any waste of natural forests resource. After middle Tang Dynasty, with the more population moved in Yangtze River Basin, the Yangtze River estuary gradually changed into the shape of the trumpet.
