About 2-3 million years to 1 million years ago, in Paleolithic Age, Yangtze River Basin is the one of the important places of living and evolution of ancient Chinese people. Large numbers of ancient people fossils have been explored and some of them could date back to early Paleolithic Age, middle Paleolithic Age and the late Paleolithic Age.

In Yangtze River History, about 2 million years ago, the ancient Chinese people lived around Three Gorges along Yangtze River. They are called "Wushan People". In 1965, the Yuanmou People fossil in Yuanmou Country in Yunnan Province has been found, which could date back to 1.7 million years ago. Yuanmou People is much more original than Peking Apeman. In 1988, another kind of people fossil has been explored. It could date back to 3-4 million years ago. All of which proves that the upper reaches of Yangtze River is the important birthplace.

In 1989, a king of Australopithecus has been found in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, which has been confirmed as the member of immediate forebear of people. It also called the Homo erectus.

In Yangtze River history, the Changyang people fossil that could be date back to 100000 years ago belongs to the early Homo sapiens in the Paleolithic Age. It was found in Hubei Province.

In Yangtze River history, the Ziyang people fossil that could date back to 10000-100000 years ago belongs to late Homo sapiens in the Paleolithic Age. It was found in Sichuan Province.
