Qutang Gorge History

Kuimen

Qutang Gorge, is the shortest (5 miles), narrowest (500 feet), and most dramatic. Two mountains, Mt. Chijia Shan (Red Passage Mountain) and Mt. Baiyan Shan (While Salt Mountain), guard the entrance to this gorge like giant castle doors.

Qutang Gorge Introduction in Yangtze River History

Qutang Gorge is also called Kui Gorge. To west, it originates from the Emperor City of Fengjie County of Chongqing Municipality. To east, it originates from the Daxi Town of Wushan County. Qutang Gorge stretches about 8 kilometers long. In Three Gorges, Qutang Gorge is the shortest but the most dangerous one.

Natural Landscape of Qutang Gorge in Yangtze River History

When Yangtze River flows through the Qutang Gorge, Yangtze River looks like a thin ribbon between two mountains. The Yangtze River is width in 100-200 meters and the narrowest width is about tens of meters. Yangtze Cruise would be very careful to cruise Qutang Gorge.

The high mountains situates on both side of Yangtze River. The main peaks are 1000-1500 meters high. With the natural landscape of torrential water, Qutang Gorge is knowns as the magnificent attraction.

Cultural Landscape of Qutang Gorge in Yangtze River History

In Mt. Baiyan on Yangtze River, there is a rock with different color. It is pink. Thus it is called the Chalk Wall. In Yangtze River History, there are many famous inscriptions carved on the wall. One of the famous inscriptions was written the words by General Sun Yuanliang: Kuimen is grand and dangerous, Yangtze Cruise fleet carefully. The words are representative of the characters of Qutang Gorge.

The other famous one of the inscriptions was written the words by Patriotic general Feng Yuxiang: Go out of Qutang Gorge together to fight with the Japanese pirates. The words are aimed to encourage the soldiers.

Scenic Spots of Qutang Gorge in Yangtze River History

There are many beautiful scenic spots at Qutang Gorge.

Kuimen

The cliff walls of Kuimen towering over the Yangtze River are 350 meters high. Twelve places on the cliffs are covered with carvings made from the Southern Song Dynasty to the time of the Republic, totaling some 200 square meters. An inscription Song Zhong Xing Sheng De Song is still well preserved. Another inscription saying "Kuimen is the most magnificent in the world, and ships cruise through rapidly with ease." is the calligraphic work by Sun Yuanliang, a modern calligrapher. The eight Chinese characters of enormous size are written in the style of the Han Dynasty.

Chalk Wall

The Chalk Wall of Qutang Gorge refers to the wall located among the crumbling walls of the Baiyan Mountain. The wall is over 1,094 yards long with many words carved into it. It is called the Chalk Wall as the wall is white in color, having been brushed with lime powder during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279). It is also called Fenbi Wall because the wall is inscribed with tablets originating from different dynasties in various fonts. Thus, it resembles the wall of a hall hung with calligraphy works, hence the name.

Qutang Gorge Features in Yangtze River History

There are many specialties of Qutang Gorge, such as the famous ancient painted pottery and "the four treasures in the study" (This is very much famous in Chinese history including writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper), local fruits, famous liquors and centipede with gold head.
