Brief Introduction of Yangtze River History - Overview

Yangtze River is the largest one of China with the main stream of more than 6300 kilometers long. Yangtze River covers more than 1,800,000 square kilometers. According to the Yangtze River history, the annual average of flowing into the sea is about nine hundred and sixty billion cubic meters, which makes Yangtze River become the No.3 in the world with the length of the main stream together.

Yangtze River History - Origination

Based on Yangtze River history, Yangtze River originates from the Gela Dandong Snow Mountain that belongs to Tanggula Mountain range in the southwest border of Qinghai Province. Actually, Yangtze River called Tongtian River when it flows through Dangqu. One part of Yangtze River is also called Jinsha River when it flows between Yushu County of Qinghai Province and Yibin City of Sichuan Province.

Yangtze River flows into the East China Sea from Shanghai City flowing through Tibet, Sichuan Province, Chongqing Municipality, Yunnan Province, Hubei Province, Hunan Provicne, Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province and Jiangsu Province and other cities.

Yangtze River History – Branch

Yangtze River is praised as the name of Mother River of Chinese people with Yellow River together during the Chinese Yangtze River history. There are many branches of Yangtze River such as Yalong River, Min River, Tuo River, Jialing River, Wu River, Xiang River, Han River, Gan River, Qingyi River, Huangfu River and so on. Yangtze River converges with the Grant Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou in Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province.

Yangtze River History – Main Stream

According to the hydrology and geographic features, the main stream of Yangtze River has been divided into three parts.

One part of Yangtze River above Yichang City of Hubei Province is called the upper reaches, which features swift water and dangerous shoals.

From Yichang City to Hukou of Jiangxi Province, it is the midstream. There are many famous lakes such as Dongtign Lake and Puoyang Lake.

The rest of Yangtze River is called lower reaches. The lower reaches of Yangtze River is wide and forms many Chongming islands.

Yangtze River History – Navigation

The water resource of Yangtze River is very rich so that the navigation of ships is very advanced. During the storage period, the ten-thousand ships are allowed to pass through Wuhan City.

Yangtze River History – Three Gorges

Three Gorges situated between Fengjie County of Chongqing Municipality and Yichang City of Hubei Province. The largest water control project of the world – Three Gorges Dam, is located in the Sandouping in Xiling Gorge.

Three Gorges includes Qutang Gorge, Wuxia Gorge and Xiling Gorge.
