Three Gorges Project's full name is Three Gorges Water Conservancy Key Project on Yangtze River. It is located in Sandouping Town in Yichang County in Hubei Province, which is more than 40 kilometers away from the Yichang City (the downtown of Yichang County).

According to Three Gorges Dam History, consists of Three Gorges dam, the Plant of Hydropower Station and the navigation structure, Three Gorges Project stretches 3035 meters in length and 185 meters in height. The Hydropower Station keeps the total capacity of 120 kilowatt, which will generate electricity 847 kilowatt in a year. The navigation structure has been established in left bank of Hydropower Station.

On the 14th December, 1994 the project of Three Gorges Dam has been operated officially.

Three Gorges Dam History Ⅰ – Time Limit for the Project

Based on Three Gorges Dam History, the project of Three Gorges Dam has been divided into three stages within 17 years.

The 1st Stage of the Project (1993-1997): it mainly runs for preparing to start the main project of Three Gorges Dam, besides builds the first-stage cofferdam and the diversion channel an so on in five years. The cofferdam is the key control project of linking the 2nd Stage and the 3rd Stage and assuring the reservoir filling and power generation on schedule.

The 2nd Stage of the Project (1997-2003): it mainly constructs the second-stage cofferdam and builds the power facilities in left bank of Hydropower Station and so on in six years.

The 3rd Stage of the Project (2003-2009): it mainly constructs the dam and the power station and proceeds to install the units and so on in six years.

On the afternoon of May 20th, 2006 Three Gorges Dam has been completed.

Known as the key project of controlling and exploiting Yangtze River, Three Gorges Project is the largest Water Conservancy Key Project of the world. It is good for flood control, power generation, navigation, and other aspects.

For example, the ships such as Yangzte Cruise of the weight of 10 thousand ton have been navigated to Chongqing Municipality directly after the completion of Three Gorges Dam. In the meanwhile, the ability of one-way navigation increases to 50 million from 10 million while the transport cost decreases 35-37%.

The main building the Three Gorges Project mainly composes of Three Gorges dam, the Plant of Hydropower Station and the navigation structure.

Three Gorges Dam located in the middle of Yangtze River, which made of concrete. The axis stretches 2309.47 meters in length and 185 meters in height. There are 23 of deep hole for flood discharge.

The Hydropower Station is constructed on the both of Three Gorges Dam setting up the water inlet. The largest capability of discharging flood can be as much as 102500 cubic meters/SEC.

When the water level of reservoir of Three Gorges Dam increases to 175 meters, it is  formed a largest submerged area of the world – Three Gorges Reservoir.

According to Three Gorges Dam History, there are around 632 square kilometers of land area has been submerged totally or basic submerged, including 2 cities, 11 counties, 116 towns and other countries.
