The Amount of Freight Volume of Three Gorges Dam Broke through 100 million Ton

On the 25th December, 2011 five of freighters have got through the ship lock of Three Gorges Dam loading more than 700 cars. When the five of freighters slowly entered the No.1 lock chamber, the steam whistle has been ringing, which means it is the first time of the mount of freight volume broke through 100 million Ton in a year after 8 years of navigation.

According to the record, the ship lock of Three Gorges Dam is praised as the "Traffic Throat" in the Yangtze River, which is also the main artery of Chongqing economy.

Since the Three Gorges ship lock has been navigated in the June, 2003 the amount of freight volume in a year has been increased gradually. It was 34.31 million Ton in 2004 while it was up to 100 million Ton in 2011. It is considered 17% of the amount has been increased annually.

The navigation of Three Gorges ship lock of Yangtze River has promoted the economy benefit of the coastwise countries.

The amount of freight volume proves the fast development of navigation of Yangtze River but also challenges the quality of the ship lock of Three Gorges Dam. Thus the large-scaled and standardized ship will be strongly promoted. The government will reinforce the management of the ship lock and optimize the comprehensive measures such as scheduling measures, besides further shorten the time of entering and passing the ship lock. In addition, other series of measures will be also taken for assure the benefit of navigation.
