General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum

The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum established in 1991 with an area of 7.2 mu (about 1.2 acres), situated at the Yuzhong Resign of Chongqing Municipality. The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum belonged to Mr. Ziwen Song in early days and was offered to General Joseph W. Stilwell during 1942 – 1944. After that, the house was in memory of General Joseph W. Stilwell, an American general who contributed a great deal to the Chinese people. The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is also an important provisional capital relic of Chongqing Municipality.

General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum – History

In honor of General Joseph W. Stilwell's contribution for fighting against with Fascism, China International Friendship Seminar and Chongqing Municipal Government established the site of "General Joseph W. Stilwell Research Center" and "General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum" at the same time in October 1991.

General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum was completely renovate from May, 2002, and opened to public again on March 19th, 2003. The museum holds several activities of communication of Chinese-Americans every year between common people in respect of culture, education and military history. During the time of renovation, some suggestions were suggested by some old American friends of General Joseph W. Stilwell. Since the Museum opened again, tens of thousands of visitor from home and overseas have been here. William Pace, a former American Secretary of Defense, made a special trip to the General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum in 1994 and was greatly touched by how well it had been preserved. Although it has been restored and expanded several times, the style of it has not been changed.

General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum – Main Building

The main building of the museum is the former residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell. It is a three-storied house, including an office, an adjutant room, two meeting rooms, bedrooms and a basement. Simple furniture is shown as it was during the time that he lived there, and more than one 200 hundred precious history photos tell tourists stories about the General Joseph W. Stilwell with Chinese people. In the residence's courtyard, a monument stands in the center on which is engraved a passage of epigraph in both English and Chinese. The epigraph was written by Franklin Delano Roosevelt on May 17, 1944. There is a bust of General Joseph W. Stilwell to one side of the monument, which gives visitors a vivid portrait of this great general.

General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum – Collection of Cultural Relic

On June 16th, 2007, a Chinese American at the age of 74 named Mr. Yongzhao Tan, donated to the General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum four vehicles of the U.S military during Second World War. The four military vehicles were used to fight during the War. The old man whose father – in – law is the liaison officer of General Joseph W. Stilwell, was born in Hongkong and emigrated to America of 18 years old. Officers of Museum said that all of the military vehicles can operate normally.
