Protection of Wulong Karst

Furong River

Brief Introduction

In the June of 2007, Wulong of Chognqing, Libo of Guizhou and Stone Forest of Yunnan were bound together to apply for the World Natural Heritage and called the South China Karst. Libo is located at the Kingdom of karst, the south of Guizhou Province. With typical coniform Karst landscape and various living things, Libo karst is the representative of South China Karst. Wulong Karst is the main constituent part of South China Karst, including Furong Cave, Three Natural Bridges and Houpingtiankeng.

After the successful application, with the recommendation of the experts from home and abroad, Chongqing decided to adjust the central area and buffer area, and the total urban area is 380 square kilometers.

The new buffer area is with the link of Wujiang River, linking the Furong Cave, Three Natural Bridges and Houpingtiankeng together. At the three different tributaries, classic Karst landscape was formed. Wulong County implemented the strategy of returning the grain plots to forestry, involving 11 towns and 96,000 mu.

Chongqing Transportation Department and Wulong County would improve the roads at the heritage site. They plan to link Furong Cave, Three Natural Bridges, Houpingtiankeng and Xiannu Mountain together, forming the loop line touring. What they value is not the speed but the building of ecological roads.

In order not to do damage to the Heritage site, Wulong County would set the supervisory control at the transportation distributing centre and the inlet and outlet and expand the scope to all the locations. By now, the construction of satellite real-time control system of Furong River Scenic Spot has been accomplished.

At the Heritage site, Chongqing municipality will construct the environmental monitor station, allocating monitoring instrument and professional staff to monitor the ford, atmosphere, temperature and humidity periodically. At the same time, they would govern the geological hazard.

On December 14, 2009, at the 57th Executive Meeting of the People's Government, The Chongqing Wulong Karst World Natural Heritage Protection Measures was passed. On Mar 1, 2010, the measure came into force.
