Brief Introduction of Baiju Temple

Baiju Temple is at the altitude of 3900 meters, located at the northern part of Gyantse, 230 kilometers south of Lhasa and more than 100 kilometers north of Shigatse. In the Tibetan language, Baiju Temple is called "Ban Kuo De Qing", which means the lucky wheel cheerful Temple.

The Construction of Baiju Temple

Baiju Temple was built when the religious sects were well-matched in strength, so in the temple, Shakya, Gelu and Buton as well as some other groups coexist peacefully. Each religious sect owns five or six Palace Halls in Baiju Temple, so the temple enjoyed a special place and influence in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. Nowadays, there are 16 palace halls in all. The main temple has three floors, and the main building is the Cuo Qing Palace (the palace for meeting). The doors of the palace are painted and lanterns are settled. At the middle of the window of the palace, many Tang Cards (colourful brocade arhat made by the Hangzhou Du Jinsheng in the first years of the Republic of China(1912-1949)). At the back of the palace, there is the Juekang, in which the lamps give out lights, making the palace shinning. During the Cultural Revolution, the copper Sakya Mani Statue was destroyed, but now it is rebuilt and consecrated at the center of the palace. There is also a copper Buddha Statue at the height of 8 meters, according to the historical materials, the construction of the Buddha cost 14 ton yellow metal. In the northern palace room of the second floor, there are more than 20 statues including Bodhisattva and mud-mad Arhat, being the art treasure of Ming Dynasty. The robes and dresses for Tibetan opera are made from silk fabrics as silks, embroidery and brocade of Ming and Qing Dynasty, amounting to more than 100, all of which are of high historical and artistic value.

The Feature of Baiju Temple

Baiju Temple is a classical building of the combination of pagoda and temple. There are pagodas in the temples, meanwhile, in the pagodas, there are temples, which like nature themselves and bring out the best in each other. The building is the classical representative of the temple buildings of Tsang (the western Tibet) between the end of 13th century and middle of 15th century. The Baiju Temple is the only one well reserved and of the character of monument. Baiju Temple is named as the King of Pagodas. The constructional distribution of landforms is artifice, the one hundred thousand pagodas are magnificent and unconventional and the compatibility of each religious sect is great, so people show their deep admiration for Baiju Temple.

Baiju Temple belongs to the Lamaism bkav brgyud pa temples and it was built by Suolang, Redanguipaba. But the specific time of the construction of the temple is not correct, because some say it was built in the Yongle 2nd year (1414 A.D), while some materials record that it was built in Zhengtong 4th year (1439 A.D).

The Influence of Baiju Temple

Baiju Temple is large in scale, great in the number of monks and makes a good combination of Shakya, Gelu and Buton, so it owns a high place and great influence in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. What's more, the style of its architecture is unique and paintings and sculptures are special, which attracts lots of virtuosos and tourists going there.
