The Gyantse Town is located at the northern bank of Nyangqu River, and it is at the altitude of 4040 meters. Gyantse has a long history. In the past, it was the political center, as well as the most prosperous town of Tsang( western Tibet). Gyantse was the transportation hub of Lhasa, yadong and Shigatse. In Qing Dynasty, the Government dispatched 500 soldiers here for frontier defense. The Tibetan local government used to set up an administrative unit here, and in 1959, it became the seat of Gyantse Town and the officers. In 1964, Gyantse prefecture was merged into Shigatse prefecture, and Gyantse Town belonged to Shigatse since then. After the road being open to traffic, the vehicles of Gyantse got less. But it is still a key post, south to Yadong, west to Shigatse, east to Shannan and north to Lhasa.
For these years, Gyantse develops at a fast speed, with 10,000 people and full social service facilities. For travelers, Gyantse is of great charming, because it is the site of the defense war of Gyantse, with Baju Monastry, Shiwan Pogada, Pala Plantation, Nyangqu River and Gyantse Carpet.
