Lou Alley is located outside the wall between Chaotianmen and East Water Gate. The one side is the city wall, the other side is stilt house along the river side. On the zigzagging pebble road around the city wall, the narrowest place only allowed one person pass through. The green ficus virens tree (Huangjue tree) gave a little life to the dark, damp, crowded alley.
Lou Alley has a long history of over 300 years. During the Kangxi Period of Qing Dynasty, Chongqing City consisted of 29 Fang and 15 Xiang. Fang and Xiang are the basic administrative organizations of ancient China. A Fang or Xiang would manage several or more than 10 streets or alleys. Lou Alley belongs to Fengbei (Monument) Xiang. There are a small bridge, and a pavilion named White Crane Pavilion. The Chaotianmen and East Water Gate which were near to Lou Alley used to be the big harbors at the time before Qing Dynasty. Therefore, Lou Alley's history might be longer than United States.
The life style at Lou Alley is quiet and peaceful. People there live a leisure life. They make living by small business such as boat tracking and selling small things. The houses there are all stilt houses which is the unique type of housing in Chongqing. The zigzagging path is also small and quiet. There, you will truly feel the real life style of local people of Chongqing.
