Dazu Grottoes is the generic name of the rock carving art in Chongqing Dazu County. Dazu County is under the jurisdiction of Chongqing City, it was built in the Tang Dynasty (758 AD), its name "Dazu" means "harvest". Dazu renowned both at home and abroad owing to its rock carving and hardware. It was determined as the starting point of the Three Gorges Tourism County of Yangtze River by the State and it is the pioneer of national eco-agriculture as well as the window opening to the outside world.
Dazu County, dotted with grottos, made up of 75 protected sites containing some 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming inscriptions and epigraphs. Including six national key cultural relics protection units.
On December 1, 1999, Mount Beishan, Mount Baoding, Mount Nan, Mount Shizhuan and Mount Shimen of Dazu Rock Carvings were approved by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be listed in the "World Heritage List" on its 23rd conference at the historical and cultural city Marrakech, Morocco.
