Wuling Bridge, also called Dragon Bridge, was built in Song Dynasty. It is famous for a mysterious legend.
According to the legend, there were once many demons and ghosts haunting in Qingpan Stream in this area. In order to conquer the evil demons and ghosts here, the local people determined to build a dragon bridge here and hanged a sword on the bridge.
When the stonemasons were mining the stone slabs to build the bridge, an old male beggar came to them for some food. Among all the stonemasons, only Master Zhangmo decided to supply him something to eat. What's more, Master Zhangmo supplied him the job of mining the stone slabs to earn his own bread.
So the beggar stayed here and began working. Strangely, he only went to the remote places to mine stone slabs and then people could only hear the sound of his striking the stones but could not see him. In the day when the dragon bridge was about to be finished, and the stonemasons put the last stone slab on the bridge. Normally, after the last stone slab was put on the bridge, the work was finished. In that day, however, the work cannot be finished no matter how hard they did it. So Master Zhangmo thought they must have done something wrong and offended their ancestral master.
At that time, the stonemasons heard if the sound of the beggar's hitting the stones. Master Zhangmo was suddenly enlightened that the beggar was the incarnation of the dead ancestral master, and that he might have known that something would be wrong with the bridge. So he came here to resolve the problem. Master Zhangmo immediately led his disciples and came to the place where the sound came from, kneeling down and calling their ancestral master for help. The beggar appeared at once and he finished the work by himself.
Seeing this, all the stonemasons were shocked and cheered up. However, the beggar disappeared in a second. It is said that that beggar is Lu Ban-the original master of the Chinese architecture. He became a deity. When the engineering got stuck, he would appear and helped to solve the problem. And the Wuling Bridge was also no exception.
