Legend of Himalaya

Long long ago, there was once a boundless sea in today's Himalaya area. The turbulent waves crushed against the cypresses and pines, hemlocks and palms on the shore, producing swooshing sounds. Groups of rhinos rambled on the bank of the lake, grazing on the grasses on the bank and drinking water in the lake. And rabbits ran on the lush green grasses happily. In the luxurious forest grew various kinds of exotic flowers and herbs with herds of spotted deer and flocks of antelopes running among them. Cuckoo, throstle and skylark jumped here and there on the branches, singing beautiful songs. Above the lush forests were the mountains over mountains, surrounded by mists and clouds.

One day, five evil dragons came here. They destroyed the forests, made floods and wrecked the flowers, grasses and trees. Fowls and beasts living here felt that a disaster was coming. So they decided to escape. Unfortunately, when they escaped eastward, the forests leaned eastward and the grasses were submerged, and when they escaped westward, turbulent and snarling waves followed them. As they were wondering what to do next, five colorful clouds floated here and turned themselves into five fairy maidens. They came to the sea and conquered the five evil dragons. The demons were defeated and the sea got calmed. The deer, antelopes, monkeys, rabbits and birds living here worshipped the five fairy maidens very much and were quite grateful for their saving their lives.

The five fairy maidens were about to leave when the fowls and animals implored them to stay here and protect this area. They five were touched and decided to stay here. The five fairy maidens ordered the sea to disappear. As a result, a lush forest appeared in the east, thousands of hectares of fertile farmlands appeared in the west, luxurious gardens appeared in the south and boundless pastures appeared in the north. The five fairy maidens became five main peaks of Himalaya Mountain: Fairy Cuiyan Peak, Fairy Xinagshou Peak, Fairy Zhenhui Peak, Fairy Guanyong Peak and Fairy Shiren Peak. The five main peaks of Himalaya Mountain stand on the southwest fringe of the mountain, protecting and blessing this area. Among them, the Fairy Cuiyan Peak is in fact the highest peak in the world-Mount Everest. Local people call it the Goddess Peak.
