Tanzhang Gorge is located in the southeast of Wanzhou District of Chongqing. It is a canyon scenic area consisting of limestone, covering an area of 69 square kilometers, among which 32,100 mu (1 mu = 666.67 square meters) are covered with forests. The forest coverage rate amounts to 64.7%. Tanzhang Gorge is about 20 kilometers long and 30-80 kilometers wide.
In Chinese, "tan" means a pond and "zhang" represents a kind of animal-river deer. There are quite a lot of ponds (tan in Chinese) in the Tanzhang Gorge scenic area. Besides, river deer (zhang in Chinese) can often be seen in the Tanzhang Gorge scenic area, thus it is called Tanzhang Gorge.
Water in the gorge is quite clear and unpolluted. Water meets the cliffs and then turns into a pond. There are altogether 48 ponds in the Tanzhang Gorge and each pond is a perfect natural swimming pool.
There are 7 branch gorges, 24 peaks and 48 creeks in the Tanzhang Gorge. Many picturesque and poetic landscapes are created by the magic nature on both sides of the gorge.
A variety of wild animals are abundant in the Tanzhang Gorge. Golden pheasants, white magpies, river deer, otters, hedgehogs, monkeys etc. can be seen here and there.
After the Tanzhang Gorge was open to the public, plank roads and rope bridges have been successively set up here. Here, you can enjoy a bonfire and take part in the local activites full of folk customs. In winter, you can appreciate the snow view.
