Jukui Academy is located on the Heishi Mountain of Baisha Ancient Town in Jiangjin County of Chongqing. It is the only well-preserved academy of Qing Dynasty in Chongqing and was listed in the first provincial units of cultural relics protection by Chongqing People's Municipality.
Jukui Academy was originally built in Tongzhi the 9th year of Qing Dynasty (1870), when it was called Jukui Yishu (Yishu was a school for free) and was completed in Guangxu the 6th year of Qing Dynasty (1880). In Guangxu the 31st year of Qing Dynasty (1905), it was renamed Jukui School.
In the following days, Jukui Academy experienced several evolutions and developments. During the period of anti-Fascist war, many famous patriots such as Feng Yuxiang, Chen Duxiu, Wen Youzhang, Ouyang Jian, She Xueman and so on came to Jukui Academy to spread patriotism.
Now, it has been turned into Jukui Middle School.
Jukui Academy faces the west. In its northeast lies the Jiuqu Pond and in the southwest is the Hening Hall which was originally built in the year of 1868 with a total area of more than 2,000 square meters.
Jukui Academy is an ancient architecture with stone-wood structure and a suspension roof. On the east-west axis lie the entrance hall, the teaching hall as well as the hallway leading to the Henian Hall. The Teaching Hall is 32.5 meters long, 5.5 meters wide and 6 meters high. Today, it is a meeting room for the Jukui Middle School.
Many famous couplets can be found on the left and right sides of the gates, taking on a quaint and antique view.
