Heishi Mountain

A Brief Introduction to Heishi Mountain

Heishi Mountain is located in the southern suburb of Baisha Ancient Town in Jiangjin County. It is not only famous in Bashu area for its grotesque stones and beautiful sceneries, but also attracts many visitors from other regions of China as well as from abroad.

Legend of Heishi Mountain

As to the origin of Heishi Mountain, there is a mysterious legend. According to the legend, there was once an evil flood dragon in the Donghaituo River in Baisha Town. Each summer, he would bring troubles to the local people by producing the floods, overturning the boats, destroying the houses and submerging the farmlands.

The flood victims then turned to Erlangshen (a deity of Taoism), the son of the flood controller-Li Bing for help. So Erlangshen Deity made a whip with chilopods to drive many huge stones into the Donghaituo River so as to conquer the evil flood dragon.

At that time, the Stone Buddha on the south bank of Yangtze River realized that filling the river with stones would lead to the river water's submerging the south bank area. So Stone Buddha became a rooster and crowed before the dawn. Since the chilopod was afraid of roosters, the whip made of chilopod lost its magic power and could not drive these stones ahead. So the stones stopped in this area, forming a mountain.
