A Brief Introduction to A'peng River

A'peng River is originated from Lichuan in Hubei Province, flowing through Qianjiang County and flows into Wujiang River in Gongtan Ancient Town of Youyang County. It is the only river flowing from the east to the west. With a length of 249 kilometers, A'peng River is the largest tributary of Wujiang River. In Qianjiang County, A'peng River flows through steep and lofty mountains and then flows down turbulently, and then the water becomes calm in flat and broad area. With high mountains, deep valleys and steep cliffs, special gorge landscapes are formed here in the A'peng River area.

Mysteries about A'peng River

In ancient tiems, the Wuling Mountain on the bank of A'peng River is said to be the supreme place for Taoism followers to become immortals. There is a mystery in A'peng River area. According to the Shihchi (the first comprehensive biographical history book in China with a wide subjects of politics, economy, culture and history) written by Sima Qian, there was once a widow in the area of A'peng River whose name is Qing. She refined medicines for longevity by means of alchemy and became the richest in the whole country. Even the then Emperor Qin Shihuang (the first emperor of feudalist China) visited and praised her and built a terrace for here. But who at earth was Qing, what was her family background, why could she master so excellent alchemy, how did she refine the medicines and where is that terrace now? All of them are still mysteries for now.

Baiyang Spring

Baiyang Spring is situated at a bend of A'peng River. It is a mysterious spring. In freezing winter, water in Baiyang Spring is very hot while in burning hot summer, water in it is quite cold. In Chinese, "Baiyang" is the poplar tree. It is said that there was once a huge poplar tree growing on the cliff beside the spring. It was so sturdy that only 3 or 4 people can encircle it. Later, it was cut down for three or four days and the tree fell into the spring. Surprisingly, the poplar tree disappeared totally. So you can see the depth of Baiyang Spring.
