A Brief Introduction to Tanghe Ancient Town

Tanghe Ancient Town is located in Jiangjin District of Chongqing. It is in the Heishi Mountain scenic area and is adjacent to the Baisha Ancient Town. Tanghe Ancient Town is an antique and simple market town. It was listed as one of the third "Famous Historical and Cultural Towns of China" for its glorious and magnificent architectural culture, plain folk customs and picturesque surroundings. Tanghe Ancient Town obtained its name due to the Tanghe River flowing through the town.

History of Tanghe Ancient Town

Tanghe Ancient Town has a long history. As early as more than 2,000 years ago, there were already human beings living in this area.

In Ming Dynasty, the Wangye (anyone ennobled by the royal was called Wangye in feudal society of China) Temple was built. Since then, many houses were built successively and here gradually became a market town.

Until the Qianlong years of Qing Dynasty, Tanghe Ancient Town became thriving and prosperous.

In 1994, a town was established here and in 2001, the scale of Tanghe Ancient Town was enlarged to a total area of more than 64 square meters with a population of 18,000 people.

Attractions of Tanghe Ancient Town

With Tanghe River flowing through, there are lush green bamboos and green hills along the banks of Tanghe River, forming the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of the Tanghe Ancient Town. Tanghe Ancient Town is abundant in cultural relics and historical sites such as stone inscriptions, ancestral temples, old manors, guild halls, plank roads and old bridges etc.

Ancient architectural complex of Ming and Qing Dynasties in Tanghe Ancient Town covers an area of almost 40,000 square meters, which are divided into three parts-Scenic area of Tanghe Ancient Streets, scenic area of Shilongmen Manor and scenic area of Yanzhong Ancestral Temple.

Scenic Area of Tanghe Ancient Streets

Area of Tanghe ancient streets occupies 2.8 hectares, with 15,000 square meters of old architectures of different styles in Ming and Qing Dynasties. These old architectures along the ancient streets are always with foundations of blue stones, with walls of bricks and woods, and with carved beams and painted rafters, which are quite exquisite and antique.

Scenic Area of Shilongmen Manor

Shilongmen Manor was built in early Qianlong years of Qing Dynasty with an area of 2 hectares among which 13,200 square meters are covered with architectures. There are more than 520 rooms in the manor. It was listed as the cultural relic protection unit of Jiangjin city due to its magnificent scale.

Scenic Area of Yanzhong Ancestral Temple

Yanzhong Ancestral Temple was originally constructed in Guangxu the 18th year of Qing Dynasty. It covers an area of 0.3 hectares with the architectural area of more than 2,000 square meters. It is one of the rare ancestral temples kept in good condition in Chongqing area.
