Reliefs on Precipice

Longduoshan Mountain is located on the boundary of Tongnan County and Hechuan District of Chongqing, 60 kilometers away from Hechuan city and 20 kilometers away from Tongnan town. The main peak of Longduoshan Mountain is in Hechuan District on the elevation of 619 meters. The highest peak in Tongnan County is 583 meters high. Longduoshan is rolling and winding like a dragon flying in the air, thus it is called Longduoshan (in Chinese, the word "long" means dragon and it is a holy creature).

Legend of Longduoshan Mountain

According to the legend, in Yongjia the third year of West Jin Dynasty (309), there was once a man named Feng Gailuo studied to make pills of immortality on the Longduoshan Mountain. He worked so hard that one day all the 17 members of his family flew away and became immortals. From then on, the Longduoshan Mountain was widely known.

Attractions of Longduoshan Mountain

Longduoshan Mountain is abundant in historical and cultural relics as well as natural sceneries. There is a huge boundary stone on the north side of the Longduoshan Mountain with a fracture in the middle part. It is said that the stone was the boundary of the Ba and Shu in history. Natural sceneries include Jinglao Cliff, Feixian Spring, Feixian Cave, Lingyin Cliff and so on.

Feixian Spring on Longduoshan Mountain

The Feixian Spring is a miracle on such a high mountain of Longsuoshan. Water in the spring is crystal clear and quite sweet/ It is said that in the heavy drought of 2006, all of other ponds or springs are dry, yet only this Feixian Spring did not.

Reliefs on Precipice of Longduoshan Mountain

The most precious highlight and also the very essence of Longduoshan Mountain is the reliefs on precipice. The earliest works of these reliefs are dated to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The majority of them are inscribed in the Tang and Song Dynasties while some relics of Ming and Qing Dynasties also remain. There are altogether 76 extant niches with a total amount of 1742 reliefs. Most of these reliefs are broken because of the weathering and some human destruction.

Stone Inscriptions on Longduoshan Mountain

Stone inscriptions are mainly on the east cliffs of Longduoshan Mountain, which are always called "Tablet Forests". There are 7 inscriptions of Tang Dynasty, 72 inscriptions of Song Dynasty as well as 3 inscriptions of Ming Dynasty. These inscriptions are in different styles of calligraphy, representing various cultures.

Buddhist and Taoist Temples on Longduoshan Mountain

There are many temples on the Longduoshan Mountain, dating back from the West Jin Dynasty to the Republican China period.

Lingshan Temple was originally built in the Jin Dynasty which was once called Fengxian Temple. There is only the foundation of the temple remaining here.

Jiutai Temple is the main temple of Longduoshan Temple. It was built in the early Tang Dynasty by Master Yongchan.

Wuchou Taoist Temple was also built in early Tang Dynasty. It was changed into the name of Niuwang Hall in the Qianlong years of Qing Dynasty and later into the name of Chouwu Taoist Temple in the Republican China period.
