Importance of Fishing City

Inscription of Fishing City

As a strategic defense point, the Fishing City was a military stronghold in history.

In February of Kai-Qing the first year (1259) of Song Dynasty, Mongol Great Khan- the leader of Mongolian troops entered and was stationed in the Shizi Mountain, determining to supervise and attack the Fishing City on his own. From February to May, he successively stroke the Yizi City, Zhenxi, Dongxin, Qisheng and Huguo gates and the outer cities, hard and fast, yet failed because of the strong defense of Fishing City.

In June, the governor of Sichuan led about a thousand battleships to aid Mongolian troops, which was defeated by the Fishing City defenders and retreated to Chongqing. With that, the Mongolian army once again attacked Fishing City, during which a senior Mongolian general-Wang Decheng was shot dead and the leader of Mongolian troops was shot injured and later dead. The Mongolian troops were forced to withdraw. The success of resistant war of Fishing City against Mongolian troops turned the situation of the then Song-Mongolian war.

As the typical representative mountain city of defensive system, Fishing City fully displayed its strong defensive effects in the era of cold weapons. It became the impenetrable fortress of Mongolian troops.

The Fishing City War drew its successful curtain due to the toughness of the Fishing City and the tenacious spirit of Fishing City troops. The westerners regarded Fishing City as the "Mecca of the East". Therefore, the victory of Fishing City War indeed changed the process of Chinese history. Before the death of Mongol Great Khan, another two troops had already occupied the interior land of South Song. We can say, if it were not for the Fishing City, the destruction of South Song Dynasty would have been 20 years earlier. In this situation, the following experiences of southern Chinese people would be the bloody genocide, just like the situation when Mongolian attacked the Arabian areas. It was the Fishing City War that sobered the Mongolians up and from then on the Mongolian troops gave up the policy of conquest which was in the form of genocide.

What's more, the death of Mongol Great Khan forced the Mongolian troops to withdraw from the western countries and thus the Fishing City salvaged many western nationalities.

Fishing City, is not only a witness of a war, a witness of a dynasty, it is, just as the westerners say, "Mecca of the East"-the witness of toughness and spirit of Chinese.
