Gate of Huayan Temple

Huayan Temple is located in the Jiulongpo District of Chongqing and is about 23 kilometers off the city center. With an area of 160,000 square meters among which 16,000 square meters are covered with constructions, Huayan Temple is very grand and magnificent consisting of the big hall and small hall. Huayan Temple is also famous for its eight scenes and the Lotus Exhibition.

The buildings in the big hall of Huayan Temple are traditional brick-and–wood-structured architectural complex in the style of courtyard. They are divided into three palaces respectively in the front, middle and rear part (the Main Hall, the Founder Shengke Palace and Kwan-yin Palace). On the left is the Jieyin (Guiding and leading) Palace. There are 16 wood reliefs of the Mahakasyapa which can be rarely seen in other temples. The precious Indian Jade Buddha, several statues made of copper, jade, stone and wood as well as the model of the Golden Tower are also collected in the big hall of Huayan Temple.

Scenes of Small Hall in Huayan Temple

The small hall in Huayan Temple is the Huayan Cave. It is on the opposite side of the big hall across the Huayan Lake. Huayan Cave is the original temple of Huayan Temple. Huayan Cave was opened up in the Tang Dynasty. It is said that there was once a monk cultivated himself according to the doctrine and built a temple on the mountain. He read "Huayan Scriptures" in the temple thus it was named Huayan Temple.

The Huayan Cave is also famous for the two Sweet Tea Olive trees with a history of over 100 years. They are rare species. In autumn, the Sweet Tea Olive trees blossom and add much vigor to the temple.

Eight Scenes in Huayan Temple

In the 160,000 square meters' area of the Huayan Temple scenic area, only 16,000 square meters' area are occupied with architectures. Therefore, the majority of the area is covered with natural scenes. Most of the famous eight scenes-"Moonlight on the Pond", "Pines on the Paling Hill", "Evening Bell from the Temple", "Night Rain in the Trees", "Verdant Twin Peaks", "Rosy Glows on the Winding Stream Water", "White Snow on the Cliff" and "Sounds by Fishes in old Cave" are natural scenes. With rolling hills, winding paths leading to the secluded places, gurgling spring, misty lake and dark green bamboos, the beauty of the eight scenes is strikingly magnificent and splendid.

Lotus Exhibition of Huayan Temple

Since 1993, Lotus Exhibition of Huayan Temple has been hold for eight years. In recent years, the Lotus Exhibition is connected with Dragon Boats Races and form the annual "Festival of Lotus and Dragon Boats".
