Zhangfei Temple was built 1700 years ago. The reason why people repaired and rebuilt it again and again and integrally moved it in recent years is to memorize an important general of Shu Kingdom in the Three Kingdoms Period for his uprightness, bravery and loyalty. The temple is near the mountain and by the water with elegant buildings and dark green trees. All its scenic spots give you an artistic enjoyment.
In the middle of the Main Hall stands a copper statue of Zhangfei. The original clay statue had been destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. On both sides of the statue are a group of statues. They vividly display many famous historical scenes such as the scene in which Zhangfei fight the enemies in Changbanpo Battle, the scene in which Zhangfei released Yan Yan and the scene of Zhangfei whipping Du You etc.
The Brothers Pavilion comes from the legend that Liu Bei (the founder of the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period of China. He was portrayed as a virtuous man in Three Kingdom Romance), Guan Yu (an army general of the Three Kingdoms Period who over the years came to be worshipped as the god of wealth in China and among overseas Chinese) and Zhangfei becoming sworn brothers in the novel "Three Kingdoms Romance". In front of the pavilion, there are giant statues of the three famous Sworn Brothers Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhangfei. It shows the scene when they swore to become brothers. Inside the hall sits the wild-eyed, red-faced Guan Yu, On either side are scenes from his life.
The Helpful Wind Pavilion, built 850 years ago, is the oldest building in the present Zhangfei Temple. It is said that Helpful Wind Pavilion is the place where Zhangfei's head was buried. It contains steles and huge portraits of Zhangfei and his wife. It is said that his spirit, by means of blowing helpful favorable winds, frequently assisted passing boats. Junkmen used to stop at the temple to light firecrackers and burn incense in appreciation.
The famous poet Du Fu in Tang Dynasty had been inseparable with Zhangfei Temple. In Yong-Tai the first year of Tang Dynasty (765), Du Fu and his family moved eastward. He had pneumonia when he reached Yunyang. So he lived in the Zhangfei Temple for 11 months and wrote over30 poems there. One of the poems is named "Cuckoos In Yun'an ". It was written in one pavilion of Zhangfei Temple. So it was called Cuckoo Pavilion. Cuckoo Pavilion is 25 meters high with two floors, 24 red columns and one green roof. The colors are very bright and it looks picturesque.
Rich collections of paintings, tablets and inscriptions earn Zhangfei temple high praises. Moreover, the tablet inscriptions, calligraphy, paintings and layers and layers of vermilion banisters and blue tiles are also considered very precious historical and cultural relics. It is well worth two to four hours' visit.
