Bamanzi was a general of Ba during the Warring States Period (770-476 BC); his tomb is also called the General Tomb. At the time of the invasion by a neighboring state, the Ba State had to ask for military help from the Chu State. Bamanzi persuaded the king of Chu to dispatch troops to help him fight against invading troops by promising to give three cities to the State of Chu.
When the war was won, Bamanzi changed his mind that he need to preserve the cities for his country and people; so he cut down his head and had it sent to Chu State as an apology instead. Deeply moved by Bamanzi's loyalty to his country and land, king of Chu buried his head with respect. The general's own people at Ba buried his body. In honor of Bamanzi's loyalty, people changed the name of Lingjiang City where Bamanzi was born, into Zhongzhou (Loyal County). The local people built a temple named Tuzhu Temple to show their gratitude and respect for bamanzi. As he died on the third day of the third lunar month, people would hang up lanterns, set off firecrackers and carry Bamanzi's portrait in a parade around the city in honor of this great hero on this day of the year.
