Simian Mountain is located in Jiangjin in Western Chongqing, 140 kilometers from the central part of Chongqing. It is a natural scenic area of the state grade, covering an area of 240 square kilometers.
Within over 95% forest cover, the mountain is covered mainly by subtropical virgin forests of evergreen broadleaf trees. There are more than 1,500 kinds of plants in there forests, including 19 kinds of rare plants such as the thorned cyathea spinulosa, the Chinese double-fan fern, the Chinese goose-palm catalpa, the Yinque tree, and the Guanyin seat lotus.
Among them, the thorned cyathea spinulosa is the only living plant in the world that existed 350 million years ago, and the Chinese double-fan fern existed at the time of dinosaur. The forests are inhabited by 207 kinds of animals, and 16 of them are protected rare animals according to the law. Therefore, the area is called "the bank of special genes". The densest forest area is at Dawopu, which is a sea of thick woods.
Magnificent mountains often exist side by side with great-looking bodies of water. In the forest area in Simian Mountain, there are quite a number of streams; there are quite a number of waterfalls, lakes and arenaceous red rock topographic features. There are more than 100 waterfalls in this area, among which 23 are more famous.
The Wangxiangtai Waterfall, the highest waterfall in China, is 152 meters high and 40 meters wide. The Yuanyang (loving-bird) Waterfall, the "male" on the south is 110 meters high, and the "female" on the north, 90 meters. This type of waterfalls are very rare in China. The Shuikousi Waterfall, 94 meters high, pours down from a natural cave high above in the cliff, presenting a very special scene. The Chaba River and the Feilong River snake their ways through the forest area, now diving down to form waterfalls, now lying still to form lakes, making scenery more beautiful.
